Reader’s Question:

My father was telling me to get SR22 Insurance for I fail to carry insurance while I drive in the roads of Washington. What I can understand is, why should I get SR22 insurance and not just simple, ordinary car insurance? Is SR22 different from other car insurance and how does it work?

Nathan

Vancouver, WA

Every driver who has been convicted of DWI or DUI, failed to carry car insurance, multiple moving violations or reckless driving and has serious violations on their record is required to have a SR22 Coverage to have their license reinstated in Washington. SR22 Insurance is an insurance policy that is required to a high risk driver to reinstate his or her driver’s license. Usually, SR22 insurance is typically for three years and can vary from one to five years depending on how serious the violation is.

When a driver is convicted, usually, the car insurance company provides SR22 insurance policy that provides a certificate to the Department of Motor Vehicles that the driver has met the minimum liability coverage of the state. The DMV is also notified if there is any lapse in the coverage so when the policy is not maintained or have already been cancelled the DMV will immediately suspend the insured driver’s license and may have an additional penalty for the driver. And if the driver that is covered by SR22 insurance and has shown lack of responsibility in the past few years, the policy will make the driver difficult to operate a vehicle. SR22 Insurance is for those who have been convicted and have records of violations for an SR22 insurance policy can make a high driver protected in any accidents that he gets involve at fault or not.

Reader’s Question:

I had received some traffic violations in my lifetime and all of a sudden my insurers asked me if I want them to file SR22 for me. Why and how should I get SR22 here in Washington?

Ned

Seattle, WA

It is just necessary for your insurers to ask you if they can file SR22 for you since you had certain traffic violations in Washington. SR22 is a required document that can prove your financial responsibility to the court for those who are convicted of some traffic violations. SR22 is usually filed by the insurance company stating that your auto liability insurance is in effect. This is actually required to those who are in accident or convicted in traffic violations and does not have a proof of financial responsibility.

Washington is one of the states that require SR22 Filing but it doesn’t mean that if this state requires SR22 Filing, all state requires it. But if you have moved to a state that does not require it, it does not mean that you don’t need SR22 Auto Insurance anymore but instead you have to continue it still for you must continue to meet the requirements of the state that you had committed the offense. If you have SR22 and move to another state, even if you have moved to a state where they require SR22 Filing, you have to fulfil he SR22 filing period from the state you moved out. If you moved to a state where they require SR22 Filing then your insurance policy where you moved in should also have the liability limits that the law requires in that state.
